A parent from Bradford remains in limbo over whether her children will receive free school meals, despite lodging an application the moment the process became available this month.
The woman, who has chosen to remain anonymous, became entitled to support under the Government’s revised free school meals criteria, which was unveiled earlier this year.
After receiving guidance from her offspring’s educational institution, she consulted Bradford Council’s digital portal in June, only to discover submissions would not be accepted until September 1.
She filed her request immediately upon the system becoming active but says no determination has been issued despite several weeks having passed since the autumn term commenced.
The mother oversees two secondary school pupils and calculates she is expending roughly £160 monthly on midday meals.
Although she insists she is not experiencing monetary difficulty, she feels the supplementary cost could serve more useful purposes elsewhere.
She noted that her income has not risen while her expenditure has increased, and that an additional £80 would prove more beneficial if preserved.
The parent also revealed she had reached out to the council for progress information but had yet to obtain a response.
The woman expressed particular frustration that submissions could not be lodged until September despite the modifications being publicised months prior.
She voiced puzzlement as to why the new arrangements were not operational earlier and why families were required to wait until September to apply.
The parent maintains households ought to have been afforded the opportunity to submit applications during the summer vacation so determinations could be reached before students returned to their studies.
While she indicated the financial outlay remains within her family’s capacity, she expressed worry that other residences may be experiencing more severe pressure.
She commented that while she herself is not encountering difficulty, some families certainly are.
The parent is now urging that the situation be addressed promptly and is seeking explanation regarding why families have encountered delays in both the application process and subsequent determinations.
A Bradford Council representative stated that the recent alterations to free school meals eligibility triggered a notable escalation in submission volume.
They explained that the modifications to the free school meals initiative from September 1 mean additional families may now become eligible for support.
The council needed to modify its application platform to accommodate the updated regulations and has subsequently experienced a substantial influx of submissions.
The department is endeavouring to assess applications with minimal delay, and the authority expressed gratitude for families’ tolerance during this period.
