Yorkshire Children’s Charity needs £142k to help 3,000 children this winter

A charitable organisation based in Yorkshire is calling on the public for assistance in providing help to disadvantaged children during the colder months ahead.

The Yorkshire Children’s Charity faces a funding deficit of £142,000 for its upcoming Winter Essentials initiative, with the number of requests for aid climbing across the region.

Officials at the organisation have confirmed that applications to support 2,500 young people through the 2026 Winter Essentials programme have already been received, surpassing the combined total recorded throughout the entirety of 2025, with further increases anticipated as temperatures drop.

With winter conditions approaching, the charity is aiming to reach a minimum of 3,000 children this season, representing a 25 percent increase compared with the 2,373 young people assisted during the initial phase of last year’s programme.

Charlotte Farrington, founder and chief executive of the Yorkshire Children’s Charity, acknowledged the mounting pressures facing families across the area.

She noted that recent increases in the cost of living serve as another indication of the challenges encountered by households already struggling to meet basic needs.

When resources are already stretched, she explained, there is minimal scope for further reductions, and the impact on children in Yorkshire has become increasingly apparent.

The Winter Essentials initiative delivers a package worth £50 to each child, comprising a warm coat, footwear, nightwear, headwear, neckwear, handwear and bedding items.

Distribution occurs through educational establishments, social care professionals and other essential workers who identify youngsters experiencing acute hardship and submit applications for assistance on their behalf.

Farrington emphasised the human element underlying each package, describing children who require coats for their journeys to school, footwear that keeps feet dry and appropriate bedding for restful sleep.

She noted that while 2,500 applications have already been lodged, further requests are anticipated.

The charity’s staff are working to ensure affected children receive necessary support, though public backing remains essential to the operation.

The cost of providing a single child with a winter essentials package stands at £50, representing an amount that can deliver immediate practical improvements to a youngster’s warmth, school attendance and daily activities.

A sum of £142,000 remains necessary to fund both stages of this year’s campaign.

Farrington described the figure as substantial but expressed confidence in the generosity of Yorkshire’s residents and business community, who have repeatedly demonstrated the impact achievable through collective action.

She indicated that contributions of any magnitude help advance the campaign’s objectives.

The programme has already surpassed the aggregate number of applications received throughout 2025, with submissions remaining open and anticipated to escalate as conditions deteriorate.

Farrington stated that the initiative aims to equip children with fundamental items that many take for granted.

She added that the programme also addresses issues of wellbeing, self-assurance, school participation and supports educational settings in building connections with families navigating considerable difficulties.

As living costs persist in rising and the need for assistance already outpaces the previous year, ensuring vulnerable children receive essential supplies has become increasingly vital.

Educational institutions, social workers and other key workers may continue submitting applications for Winter Essentials support via the Yorkshire Children’s Charity’s official website or through direct email correspondence.

Members of the general public and commercial enterprises wishing to contribute to the 2026 Winter Essentials campaign may make donations through the Yorkshire Children’s Charity’s official website.
