Bradford ranked least peaceful in Yorkshire with lowest green space in region

Yorkshire and the Humber’s most problematic location for residential tranquility has been identified in a comprehensive new analysis.

Research conducted by property legal experts SAM Conveyancing placed Bradford at the bottom of the regional rankings for peacefulness.

The West Yorkshire city occupied position 288 among 316 local authorities assessed across England and Wales.

Within the Yorkshire and Humber region, which comprises 15 local authorities, Bradford finished last.

The investigation assessed tranquility through four distinct criteria: noise levels during evening hours, criminal activity prevalence, accessible green areas, and proximity to entertainment venues.

SAM Conveyancing chief executive Andrew Boast commented that prospective purchasers typically dedicate considerable attention to measurable property aspects such as cost, professional surveys, and school admission zones.

He noted that minimal consideration is given to the immediate sensory experience upon arriving at a new residence, particularly ambient sound levels.

Daytime property viewings, he suggested, offer limited insight into nocturnal acoustic conditions or the potential impact of nearby licensed establishments.

Boast emphasized that such information remains publicly accessible and involves no expense to investigate, urging those purchasing property to make enquiries prior to contract exchange rather than discovering issues afterward.

Statistical data revealed Bradford documented 117 criminal offences per thousand inhabitants alongside merely 18.2 square metres of recreational green space allocated per resident.

This green space allocation represented the lowest figure within the region and fell considerably short of the nationwide median of 30.4 square metres.

Neighbouring authorities Leeds and Calderdale positioned themselves immediately above Bradford in the regional hierarchy at 14th and 13th respectively.

Each demonstrated crime rates exceeding 100 incidents per thousand residents while recording the region’s most significant night-time acoustic disturbances.

The Yorkshire and Humber area collectively achieved modest standing in the national assessment.

Six of its 15 authorities secured positions within the upper half of the England and Wales table, though none advanced into the leading 100 entries.

Across the broader national picture, in excess of 50 percent of the population in England and Wales—approximately 33 million individuals—inhabit residences subjected to night-time acoustic levels surpassing the World Health Organization’s recommended threshold of 40 decibels.

North Yorkshire claimed the distinction of being the region’s most serene authority.

The county registered a tranquility rating of 58.6 out of 100 and maintained the lowest criminal activity rate within the area.

Its national standing placed it at 106th position among the 316 authorities evaluated.

North Lincolnshire secured second place regionally with a score of 58, while Rotherham followed in third with 56.9.

The East Riding of Yorkshire and Doncaster comprised the remaining positions within the regional top five.

The subsequent standings saw York at sixth place, Wakefield seventh, and Barnsley eighth.

Kingston upon Hull occupied ninth position, with North East Lincolnshire completing the regional top ten.
