Bradford Crown Court to receive specialist rape courtroom

A sweeping reform of how rape and serious sexual offences are prosecuted has been unveiled by ministers, with specialist courtrooms earmarked for every Crown Court across England and Wales.

Bradford Crown Court features among the venues set to gain a dedicated space for such cases as part of the two-year rollout announced this week.

The facilities will incorporate private waiting areas and distinct entry points, designed to shield those bringing complaints from encountering defendants or their representatives during proceedings.

Cases involving sexual violence will receive guaranteed fixed dates under the new approach, replacing the existing system of flexible trial lists that permits last-minute adjustments.

Ministers contend this structural shift should minimise the psychological burden on those participating in legal action and accelerate resolution of outstanding matters.

Official data shows cases reaching Crown Court in 2025 required an average of 424 days to conclude.

Officials have acknowledged that extended intervals between charge and hearing frequently result in complainants abandoning their pursuit of justice before matters reach trial.

Alongside courtroom modifications, personnel throughout the court estate will undergo specialist instruction in trauma-aware practices.

A trial initiative will additionally establish dedicated advisors to guide individuals through procedural requirements.

The Prime Minister indicated the package would restore balance to proceedings and prioritise those affected by crime.

The Lord Chancellor acknowledged that the current approach had frequently reduced those involved to administrative processes rather than treating them with appropriate dignity.

The measures form a component of a broader governmental commitment to substantially diminish offences against women and girls within ten years.

Proposals already confirmed include specialist investigative units across all police services by the conclusion of 2027, enhanced legal assistance for those involved, and increased investment in support services.

The chief executive of Rape Crisis England & Wales endorsed the direction of travel, characterising the measures as an essential move towards courts equipped to serve their intended function.

The Courts and Tribunals Bill is anticipated to resume its parliamentary passage the following month.
