The initial section of an extensive enhancement programme along one of Bradford’s primary arterial routes has been concluded, with subsequent work now in progress.
Bradford Council has confirmed that the first portion of the Thornton Road Enhancement Project has reached completion, while construction on the second phase has commenced in the section between Whetley Lane and Spring Head Road.
The broader initiative, which commenced in July, carries an anticipated timeline of approximately 18 months and constitutes a component of a substantial upgrade programme designed to strengthen transport connections linking western areas of Bradford with the city centre.
According to the council, the initiative will provide improved pedestrian crossings and junction layouts, modernised bus stop facilities, enhanced provisions for pedestrians and cyclists, additional landscaping features, and superior access routes for those travelling to and from the city centre.
Thornton Road is scheduled to remain accessible to traffic throughout the construction period wherever feasible.
The scheme encompasses the segment of Thornton Road extending from Spring Head Road through to Girlington Road and integrates both the West Bradford Cycle Superhighway Phase 2 initiative and the Four Lane Ends Corridor Enhancement Project.
The planned enhancements comprise predominantly separated cycling infrastructure linked to the existing cycle superhighway network, modernised crossing facilities, modifications intended to increase capacity and enhance safety at the Four Lane Ends junction, road resurfacing, installation of new illumination and drainage systems, and supplementary tree planting throughout the area.
The project is being delivered jointly by Bradford Council alongside the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, with funding provided by the UK Government through investment in sustainable transport infrastructure development.
