Young students from Manningham have gained direct exposure to the workings of British democracy through a recent educational excursion to London.
The cohort, comprising children from schools within the Priestley Academy Trust, traveled to the capital for an immersive encounter with parliamentary institutions and processes.
The initiative sought to enhance participants’ understanding of governance and the legislative framework that shapes national policy.
Atkinson, the trust’s chief executive, expressed pride in providing pupils with such a valuable experience.
He noted that walking through the corridors of Westminster and witnessing the origins of legislation would leave a lasting impression on the young visitors.
The trust aims to demonstrate that such civic spaces are accessible to all children, with the aspiration that today’s students might become tomorrow’s political leaders.
Financial support for the journey was partially contributed by the UK Parliament Education Centre, an organization dedicated to providing curriculum-aligned educational sessions and transportation assistance to schools.
Following an early morning departure from King’s Cross, the children were treated to views of celebrated London attractions, encompassing Trafalgar Square, The Mall, the exterior of Buckingham Palace, and St James’s Park.
After proceeding along the Thames waterfront and enjoying refreshments at Jubilee Gardens, the group arrived at the Palace of Westminster.
Within this historic building, the children engaged in a workshop titled ‘Parts of Parliament: Building a law,’ which outlined the progression of legislation through parliamentary stages.
The session, appropriate for learners between seven and eleven years old, featured guided exploration of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords chambers.
Upon concluding their parliamentary programme, the students passed nearby Downing Street before heading back to King’s Cross for their return journey.
Back in Bradford, the pupils are now expected to act as ambassadors within their respective schools, conveying what they discovered and contemplating their role within the nation’s democratic system.
The Priestley Academy Trust unites six educational establishments located in Manningham: Westbourne Primary School, Miriam Lord Primary School, Margaret McMillan Primary School, Green Lane Primary School, Lilycroft Primary School, and Atlas Community Primary School.
The collective mission of these institutions is to provide every child with opportunities and the ambition to achieve their full potential.
