An educational establishment located on one of Bradford’s largest housing developments has been recognised for creating a supportive environment for its students, although concerns remain regarding academic results and pupil presence.

Carrwood Primary School, situated on Eversley Drive within the Holme Wood area, underwent an official inspection on June 30.

This assessment marked the institution’s first evaluation since becoming part of the Leading Learners Multi Academy Trust in 2023.

Examiners commended the school’s initiatives in fostering pupils’ personal growth and emotional welfare, identifying this as a notable strength of the institution.

The inspection determined that instructional practices, the academic programme, early years education, inclusive practices, management structures and oversight all met required standards.

Child protection measures were deemed satisfactory.

Inspectors highlighted the institution’s welfare support as a particular asset, noting that leaders’ engagement with vulnerable households deserved commendation.

According to the evaluation, members of staff interact with students through relationships marked by kindness, confidence and mutual regard.

Learners benefit from an extensive selection of excursions, outings, athletic pursuits and enrichment activities.

The school was also recognised for offering leadership opportunities to students, including involvement in a pupil parliament and participation in democratic processes.

Education regulators observed that the serene atmosphere cultivated throughout the premises helps ensure students feel protected and supported, enabling them to develop effectively during their time at the school.

Headteacher Nicola Malt expressed pride in the recognition of the school’s supportive ethos.

She stated that the inspection team’s acknowledgment of the institution’s welfare provisions and the nurturing environment established for students and their families was deeply meaningful.

She noted that the care provided for young people extends beyond academic instruction, and witnessing this reflected in the official assessment was significant.

Early years provision also received positive recognition Examiners additionally lauded the school’s foundation stage provision, indicating that leaders are committed to ensuring children receive an excellent beginning to their educational journey.

The assessment emphasised a comprehensive and ambitious academic programme, successful literacy instruction and a robust commitment to inclusivity, with pupils possessing special educational needs and disabilities receiving customised assistance.

Personnel informed inspectors that Carrwood represented an exceptional environment where they believed they made genuine differences to children’s futures, while governing body members and trust officials were recognised for offering useful support alongside appropriate challenge.

Academic performance and presence remain priorities Despite the favourable aspects, regulators classified both academic outcomes and attendance as areas warranting further development.

Examiners reported that publicly available results continue to fall short of targets, with numerous students, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, performing below anticipated levels in national assessments.

While younger students demonstrate more encouraging progress and remedial assistance is producing benefits, inspectors observed that deficiencies in knowledge and core abilities are not being addressed rapidly enough during Key Stage 2.

Regular presence at school was also flagged as an ongoing difficulty.

The assessment indicated that an excessive number of students experience frequent absences and that overall attendance figures fall below what leaders anticipate, despite measures implemented to enhance the situation.

The school’s absence rate stood at 9.3 percent during the 2024-25 academic year, in contrast to the national figure of 5.2 percent, while persistent non-attendance reached 34.2 percent, substantially exceeding the national level of 13 percent.

Inspectors acknowledged that leaders possess a clear awareness of the challenges and are already implementing measures.

Miss Malt explained that inspectors had noted the school maintained an accurate and candid recognition of areas requiring continued development, particularly concerning attendance and outcomes at the conclusion of Key Stage 2.

She outlined that additional mathematics instruction, handwriting assistance and catch-up sessions had already been introduced, while efforts to collaborate with households to improve attendance were underway.

She expressed determination to build upon the solid foundations highlighted in the assessment.

School demonstrates positive momentum Yvonne Brown, Chief Executive Officer of Leading Learners Multi Academy Trust, indicated that the results reflected the dedication demonstrated by staff, students and families.

She stated that the Carrwood community deserved genuine credit for their collective efforts in establishing such a distinctive educational environment where every child is acknowledged, respected and integrated, as evidenced by this assessment.

She noted that the school was progressing positively and operating with urgency and focus, with backing from the Trust, to further enhance attendance and achievement for all learners.
