Bradford Council warns swimmers to stay out of River Wharfe at Cromwheel, Ilkley

Published on

A stretch of the River Wharfe near Ilkley has been closed to swimmers following a contamination event.

The affected area covers the designated bathing zone at Cromwheel, a popular spot for aquatic activities in the Wharfe.

Bradford Council confirmed it received notification from the Environment Agency regarding a discharge at Beanlands Parade which entered the waterway on Friday afternoon.

Official records indicate the contamination began at approximately 15:00 and mitigation measures were implemented by 16:54.

As a temporary measure, water users have been urged to avoid entering the river at this location while remediation work takes place.

Current guidance from the Environment Agency will remain active until technical assessments confirm the issue has been fully resolved.

Information about the incident has been made available through official channels.

The Cromwheel site gained official bathing water status in 2021 and undergoes regular monitoring during the swimming season.

Water quality data and public advisories for the location are published in the Environment Agency’s bathing water profiles.

The latest assessment for this section of river received a Poor classification under official testing criteria.

Officials have yet to disclose what triggered the discharge or the severity of environmental effects.
