Buyer found for Gipton South Children’s Centre after failed auction sale

Published on

A purchaser has been secured for a former children’s centre after an unsuccessful attempt to sell the property through auction.

Leeds City Council is preparing to approve a private transaction for the Gipton South facility after receiving no bids during the public sale.

Programmes previously delivered from the Coldcotes Grove location have been relocated to the Dame Fanny Waterman Centre and Osmondthorpe Children’s Centre in the surrounding area.

The relocation formed part of a wider restructuring of children’s centre services that resulted in the closure of 18 additional facilities.

While Gipton South was selected as one of 31 services to remain operational, the physical structure was considered financially unsustainable to maintain.

According to a council document, the property was offered at auction on 27 January but failed to reach its reserve price, with no bids submitted during the sale.

Offers were subsequently received following the auction.

The site, which had an estimated value exceeding £250,000, was anticipated for conversion to residential purposes, removing the authority’s responsibility for ongoing maintenance expenditure.

The report indicated that the property would undergo development contributing to sustainable expansion in an area that has experienced regeneration in recent years through the establishment of shopping parks and new housing developments.

The disposal would eliminate various operational expenses associated with keeping the building functional while generating capital income from the sale.

The former children’s centre would require significant investment to maintain in adequate condition.

Both the purchase price and the identity of the new owner are being withheld by the council.

A council representative confirmed that the Gipton South Children’s Centre was offered at auction on 27 January 2026 without success.

A transaction has now been arranged outside the auction process and is advancing conditional upon contract completion.

Further details will be provided in due course, though additional information cannot be disclosed for reasons of commercial confidentiality.
