Headingley is set to receive exclusively renewable electricity from the start of 2027 under a fresh collaboration between Yorkshire County Cricket Club and clean energy technology company UrbanChain.
The arrangement aligns with the organisation’s decade-long Chasing Glory initiative alongside its broader ambitions for the Headingley venue.
According to Commercial Director Daniel Matson, the deal illustrates the club’s drive to establish an environmentally sustainable operation while simultaneously showcasing its determination to function as a conscientious and progressive entity.
Matson explained that the collaboration guarantees the electricity supplied to Headingley originates entirely from renewable sources, with complete traceability regarding its supply chain.
He added that future plans involve progressively sourcing a larger proportion of power from installations within Yorkshire itself.
UrbanChain, which launched operations in 2017, manages a private energy exchange that links renewable energy producers directly with purchasers, providing enhanced insight into and authority over energy procurement strategies.
The technology firm intends to progressively increase the volume of electricity generated within Yorkshire’s borders as part of the contractual agreement.
Chief Growth Officer Charlie Parry emphasised that Yorkshire County Cricket Club represents considerably more than a sporting establishment, describing it as one of the region’s most prominent institutions.
He stated that this distinction explains the significance of the partnership, positioning the arrangement as one of active energy provision rather than mere sponsorship.
