Wonka chocolate range returns to Bradford stores after 12 years

The Wonka confectionery brand, discontinued a decade ago, has made a return to British shops following its acquisition by Italian confectionery company Ferrero.

The revival follows Nestlé’s decision to shelve the range in 2014 after years of declining sales.

The Wonka name traces its origins to 1971 in the United States, inspired by Roald Dahl’s beloved 1964 children’s novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The fictional sweets depicted in the story, along with the cinematic adaptations, provided the foundation for an extensive product line that would eventually span the Atlantic.

Rowntree secured the British rights to the Wonka brand in 1986, and Nestlé acquired Rowntree Mackintosh two years later, bringing the confectionery under the Swiss food giant’s control.

Under Nestlé’s stewardship, the Wonka range expanded significantly across the United Kingdom and Ireland, introducing popular novelty sweets such as Nerds, Gobstoppers and Fizz Wiz.

Chocolate bars bearing the Wonka name also entered the British market during this period.

A significant marketing push accompanied the 2005 release of Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory adaptation, which featured Johnny Depp portraying the eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka.

Despite a subsequent attempt to revive the brand in 2013, challenging sales figures prompted Nestlé to cease production of the Wonka confectionery line in 2014.

Ferrero obtained ownership of the broader Wonka trademark in 2018 and has now unveiled a comprehensive relaunch in the British market.

The company outlined its vision for the revived range, emphasising that Wonka had for more than six decades represented imagination, invention and memorable experiences.

Ferrero stated its intention to bring that universe to life through an all-new confectionery collection that merges the Wonka world with its own research and development capabilities, creative vision and quality standards.

Gary Youren, Ferrero’s United Kingdom head of research and development, explained the philosophy behind the new products.

He noted that consumers had historically appreciated Wonka offerings not solely for their eccentricity or novelty, but because the items delivered genuine taste appeal.

The development team sought to create products that combined excellent flavour with unexpected elements designed to surprise consumers.

The inaugural Wonka lineup encompasses Chocolate Magic Hats, Purpleypurple Caramel Flavour Chocolate bars, Milk Chocolate Oompa Loompa treats, Magic Garden Lemon and Lime Ropes, Blueberry and Strawberry Oompa Loompa Gummies, and a Wonka Limited Edition Kinder Joy offering.

Distribution of Ferrero’s Wonka products commenced across British retail outlets.

Youren observed that employees within the chocolate manufacturing operation had long experienced comparisons between their workplace roles and the fictional scenarios depicted in the source material.

He described the opportunity to develop genuine Wonka products as particularly thrilling for the team.

Consumer response to the brand’s return has generated considerable enthusiasm on social media platforms.

Online posts documenting the revived products attracted thousands of engagements, with shoppers expressing eagerness to sample the complete range and describing the offerings as appearing magical.

Some users recalled past Wonka bars, particularly those associated with the Johnny Depp film iteration, while others called for the reintroduction of previously popular items such as popping candy bars.
