New Acute Renal Dialysis Unit Opens at Bradford Royal Infirmary

Published on

A newly opened Acute Renal Dialysis Unit at Bradford Royal Infirmary has undergone a comprehensive transformation to enhance treatment conditions for patients requiring kidney filtration therapy.

The upgraded facility at BRI incorporates contemporary design principles aimed at maximising comfort and clinical care for hospital inpatients undergoing dialysis, including individuals transferred from Airedale Hospital.

Consultant nephrologist Dr Mansoor Ali at BRI stated that the renovation has fundamentally changed the unit into a bright, modern space addressing the requirements of a high-demand service.

The redesigned environment creates an open, illuminated and tranquil atmosphere intended to improve patient comfort while supporting optimal care delivery.

The facility now features a dedicated procedure room, three individual single-bed accommodation areas and communal patient bays.

Additional improvements encompass a new air handling system, renewed flooring and ceiling installations, and decorative light coverings inspired by stained glass designs that diminish glare and assist in reducing patient distress.

While renovation work took place, the service operated temporarily from Ward 10 at BRI.

Treatment sessions have since returned to the renovated location, with provision now extending into evening hours alongside traditional morning and afternoon slots.

Approximately 380 patients utilise the trust’s primary dialysis services, which operate from facilities at St Luke’s Hospital and Skipton Hospital.

Acute dialysis units deliver essential kidney filtration treatment for individuals experiencing critical kidney damage or rapid-onset renal failure.
