All Ed Sheeran Loop Tour supporting acts quit after Macklemore removal

All opening acts for Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour have withdrawn following the departure of rapper Macklemore from the schedule.

Macklemore was removed from the tour roster after making statements regarding the situation in Gaza during a recent concert appearance.

During a performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Macklemore stated that the people of Gaza and the West Bank had not been forgotten, which prompted a formal request for his removal from the tour.

Macklemore confirmed on Monday through Instagram that Sheeran and his management had reached the decision to remove him from the Loop Tour.

Sheeran, who hails from Halifax, subsequently explained that the promoter’s decision, rather than his own, had led to the cancellation.

Sheeran maintained that he bore no responsibility for the situation.

He held personal opinions about the devastating conflict.

His choice to remain silent publicly did not reflect indifference, and did not preclude private support for relevant causes.

Macklemore stated through Instagram that his decision to leave the tour was not made hastily, noting that Sheeran had been personally supportive and had significantly impacted his career.

He indicated that he could not remain silent while individuals with substantial financial resources exploited their positions to suppress legitimate voices condemning Israeli actions and highlighting the killing of civilians.

He noted that continuing without taking such a stance would represent a betrayal of his own values, and that remaining authentic to himself and his ancestors who resisted colonisation and fought for freedoms he now enjoys in Ireland was essential.

Beoga issued a statement announcing their withdrawal from the remaining American dates of the Loop Tour, citing the suppression of Macklemore’s remarks by what they described as Zionist lobbying groups.

The group added that performing for audiences each evening represented a career highlight, but that participating in venues which stifled advocacy for Palestinian rights was not a viable option for them.

Finneas commented that artists must retain the ability to voice support for those experiencing oppression.

Macklemore responded to each announcement with a heart symbol and the flag of Palestine.

Sheeran’s next scheduled appearance is set for September 19 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, where Graham and Ryan had been slated to serve as opening acts.

Graham stated that financial means should not determine who controls public discourse, and that no individual’s wealth should dictate which humanitarian situations merit acknowledgment.

He expressed appreciation for Sheeran and gratitude for their shared experiences, asserting that those feelings remained unchanged.

However, he could not continue promoting certain messages while proceeding with the tour under current circumstances, and would therefore withdraw from the remaining dates.

He described the decision as regrettable but necessary.

Elan Carr, executive director of the Israeli-American Council, which initiated the petition for Macklemore’s removal, described the rapper’s conduct as disgraceful.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Carr stated that Macklemore addressed a large audience and proceeded to make unfounded accusations against the State of Israel and Jewish communities.

He noted that while any political statement during a performance would be unsuitable in such circumstances, Macklemore had advanced something approaching a blood libel against Israel and, by extension, Jewish people.

Carr maintained that such content had no place at a concert, which should provide a welcoming environment for all attendees.

He referenced Sheeran’s stated commitment to inclusive performances for all concertgoers.

He expressed that creating an unwelcoming atmosphere for Jewish audience members and supporters of Israel constituted a harmful act, and that Macklemore’s removal from further performances was entirely justified.

Representatives for Sheeran and Macklemore were approached for comment.
