Thailand cuts UK tourist visa-free stay from 60 to 30 days

British nationals have been cautioned about the possibility of a decade-long prohibition from entering Thailand following the implementation of stricter visa regulations.

Under the revised framework, visitors from the United Kingdom will be permitted to remain in Thailand for a maximum of 30 days without a visa, representing a significant reduction from the previous 60-day allowance.

The updated policy takes effect on Tuesday, September 15, and applies to nationals of 60 countries.

This adjustment marks a reversal of an expansion implemented in July 2024, which had permitted travellers from 93 nations to stay for up to 60 days visa-free.

The 30-day visa exemption covers tourism, business activities, and urgent or ad-hoc work purposes.

Travellers who enter Thailand prior to September 15 will generally be permitted to remain for the duration originally granted upon arrival.

Individuals seeking to extend their stay beyond 30 days must submit an application for the relevant visa category in advance or, where applicable, request an extension through Thai immigration authorities.

Border officials may require visitors to demonstrate compliance with entry criteria, including confirmation of adequate financial resources amounting to a minimum of 10,000 Thai baht per individual or 20,000 Thai baht per family unit.

Evidence of onward or return travel arrangements must also be presented.

British citizens have previously been refused admission for not satisfying these documentation requirements.

A statement from Thai authorities indicated that the list of countries affected by the revised policy was updated to align with current circumstances, incorporating considerations of national security, economic factors, and tourism promotion objectives.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has urged visitors to adhere to the regulations, warning that breaches may result in penalties including the severe consequence of being barred from the country for as long as 10 years.

Overstaying the permitted duration attracts a daily fine of 500 Thai baht, capped at 20,000 baht.

Individuals who overstay face additional risks of detention, deportation at their own cost, and a long-term prohibition from re-entering Thailand.

Prospective visitors planning employment, educational pursuits, retirement, or relocation to Thailand must obtain the appropriate visa documentation prior to arrival.

Further prerequisites include holding a passport valid for no less than six months beyond the intended entry date and possessing at least one blank page for immigration stamps.

Travellers are also required to complete a digital travel registration form a minimum of three days before arriving in Thailand.
