Skipton Sheep Trail auction funds accessible canal boat charity’s 37 years

Skipton’s community has united through a creative initiative combining textile art and waterways heritage.

Civic head Winston Feather recently boarded Richard’s Endeavour, an inclusive vessel operated by the charitable organisation Spirit of Endeavour, to observe the local Skipton Sheep Trail exhibition.

During his visit, two of the installation’s twenty crocheted ovines accompanied him—Ralph and another bearing his own name.

Bob Evans, serving as both Board Chair and vessel navigator for the organisation, noted that participation in the initiative had brought genuine satisfaction, providing pleasure to individuals confronting various challenges.

The trail showcases twenty handmade sheep positioned throughout the urban area, with an internet-based sale concluding on September 28.

Proceeds will fund the charity’s mission to expand accessible waterway opportunities for those managing physical limitations.

The organisation marks its thirty-seventh year operating community canal excursions, having originated under the auspices of the former Skipton and Craven Action for Disability collective.

Oversight now rests with Spirit of Endeavour, which manages the custom-designed broad-hull boat Richard’s Endeavour navigating the Leeds and Liverpool waterway.

Annually, approximately one hundred and twenty leisure and therapeutic voyages are facilitated.

The vessel incorporates universal access features including mechanised lifting mechanisms, adapted sanitation facilities, and spacious walkways guaranteeing safety and ease for all travellers.

Capacity reaches twelve individuals, with accommodation for four mobility chair users, and the service caters regularly to residential care providers, neighbourhood associations, and household groups.

The organisation relies wholly on unpaid personnel spanning governance roles through to maritime crews.

To sustain its operational timetable, Spirit of Endeavour requires additional unpaid helpers possessing navigation qualifications.

Supporters can monitor the Skipton Sheep Trail social media channel for developments regarding the auction before its September 28 conclusion.
