Part of the M621 was sealed off in both directions in the early hours of Friday morning after a police operation took place.
According to National Highways, the motorway was blocked between its junction with the M62 and Junction 2A in the vicinity of Leeds, with emergency responders staying at the location.
Traffic monitoring service Inrix indicated that the restriction covered the M621 stretch between Junction 4, which connects to the A61 Hunslet Distributor, and Junction 2, which links to the A643 Elland Road.
The closure commenced at approximately 3.32am.
The situation caused queues to form on both sides of the motorway.
National Highways recorded approximately 10-minute hold-ups while the restrictions remained active, with heavy traffic impacting surrounding routes throughout Leeds.
Earlier traffic reports showed vehicles banking back to Junction 1 at Beeston on the eastbound side and Junction 6 at Belle Isle Road on the westbound side.
The westbound lanes have since been cleared and reopened to traffic.
Nevertheless, eastbound travel continues to move slowly between Junction 2, marked by Elland Road, and Junction 4, near the Hunslet Distributor, as a result of a collision that occurred earlier.
The current traffic update was scheduled to remain active until roughly 6.28am.
West Yorkshire Police has been contacted regarding additional details surrounding the operation.
Motorists passing through the area have been urged to factor in additional travel time given the ongoing disruptions.
