A nationwide celebration of architectural and cultural heritage is set to unfold across the Bradford area this month, with dozens of complimentary events scheduled throughout the district.

The annual festival, running from September 11 to 20, will feature activities spanning thousands of venues throughout the United Kingdom, with more than 30 opportunities available locally at no cost.

Museums operated by the local authority will participate in the celebrations, hosting distinctive programming at two significant sites.

In Keighley, Cliffe Castle Museum will welcome visitors on Sunday, September 13, between 11am and 3pm, for a programme titled Everyday Histories: Sports and Pastimes.

The event will examine recreational traditions and leisure activities cherished by communities over many decades, highlighting neighbourhood clubs, traditional games, and pastimes that have connected residents through generations.

Interactive workshops will enable families to engage directly with historical pastimes.

The Bradford Industrial Museum will mark the closing weekend of the festival on Sunday, September 20, from 11am until 3pm, with an event honouring artisan skills and manufacturing expertise.

The programming draws inspiration from the institution’s Made by Many Hands exhibition, shining a spotlight on traditional craftspeople and the individuals preserving these significant practices in contemporary times.

Darley Street Market will serve as another hub for festivities, offering visitors the chance to participate in period-appropriate entertainment including classic street games.

A presenter dressed in Victorian-era attire will guide attendees through activities such as coin-rolling challenges, ball-tossing competitions, and quoits matches.

Musical performances will accompany the programme.

An appearance by Florence White, a former textile mill employee and pioneering figure in local history, will feature at the market.

White advocated relentlessly for fair treatment of unmarried women who were compelled to remain in employment until the age of 70.

Cycling culture will receive dedicated attention at Darley Street Market on September 20, where a documentary presentation will explore the legacy of Pennine Cycles and its contribution to local bicycle manufacturing.

The programme will include exhibitions of antique bicycles, historical imagery, creative workshops suitable for families, and interactions with representatives from Capital of Cycling, various cycling clubs, and the Beryl Bikes initiative.

Archive footage depicting the district’s commercial and marketplace history will screen at the market venue, with presentations scheduled for 10am, 2pm, and 4pm daily between September 20 and 23.

The screening project represents collaboration between the Bradford Heritage Action Zone initiative and the Yorkshire and North East Film Archive.

Additional programming will prepare attendees for an upcoming Heritage Action Zone workshop focusing on lime mortar pointing techniques, which Womersley’s Ltd will conduct at the market courtyard on September 23.

Councillor Ian Walker, Portfolio Holder responsible for Neighbourhoods and Communities within the local authority, expressed enthusiasm for the programme.

The festival presented an excellent chance for residents to uncover the extraordinary historical and cultural wealth present throughout the district, he stated.

Numerous local organisations were contributing to the celebrations, ensuring diverse offerings for all interests.

The initiative enabled exploration of unfamiliar locations, deeper understanding of narratives that have influenced communities, and recognition of the individuals, customs, and cultural practices that continue to define the area’s distinctive character.
