A by-election has been scheduled for next month after a Labour councillor in the western part of Leeds stepped down from office.
Leeds City Council has confirmed that polling will take place on Thursday, October 22 to fill the vacancy left by Peter Carlill in the Calverley and Farsley ward.
Mr Carlill had served as a representative for the area since 2018.
His decision to resign was announced last week.
According to a spokesperson for the local authority, the ballot count will be conducted at the Civic Hall on the same evening as the vote.
The departing councillor had held the position of executive member responsible for transportation and development matters since May of this year.
In a statement published on social media, Mr Carlill described his time as a ward representative as the most rewarding position he had ever occupied.
However, he noted that the role demanded constant availability and continuous public attention, with feedback ranging from justified and constructive to unfavourable.
The work carried out by Mr Carlill through his involvement with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s transportation panel was also acknowledged.
Tracy Brabin, the Mayor of West Yorkshire, offered her regards for his future endeavours and expressed confidence that he would maintain his commitment to serving residents of the area.
The council has published official notice of the vacancy on its website.
Local government wards in Leeds each return three elected members, with each term lasting four years.
The next set of council elections is due to take place in May.
