A 55-year-old man who sustained a dog bite injury on a public footpath later succumbed to complications arising from the wound, according to proceedings at an inquest opening.
James Judge died following an incident that occurred on the former railway footpath situated off Blacker Lane in Wakefield on August 15.
Lee Ellis, also aged 55 and residing in Calder Grove, Wakefield, faces charges of manslaughter alongside allegations of being responsible for a dog that was dangerously out of control and caused injury resulting in death.
During the inquest opening conducted on Monday, proceedings were formally initiated before being adjourned.
Acting senior coroner Oliver Longstaff stated that Mr Judge was conveyed to Leeds General Infirmary following the incident and was formally identified by his maternal relative.
A post-mortem examination established a provisional cause of death as complications stemming from a wound to his right leg sustained through a dog bite.
The inquest was informed that Mr Judge had never married and that his birthplace was Horbury, Wakefield, where he also maintained his residence at the time of his death.
Mr Longstaff indicated that the inquest would be suspended pending the resolution of associated criminal proceedings.
The coroner noted that whether the inquest would need to be reconvened could not be determined until those proceedings had concluded.
Ellis is scheduled to appear before Leeds Crown Court on September 16.
