Bradford artists protest council plan to divert £400k arts funds to reopen tip

Published on

A campaign has emerged in protest against Bradford Council’s decision to redirect £400,000 away from arts expenditure toward reopening a waste recycling facility and extending bank holiday access to refuse sites across the area.

The funding, which had been designated for cultural activities and arts organisations, will now support the resumption of operations at Sugden End Household Waste Recycling Centre instead.

Council representatives maintained that the allocation does not impinge upon existing cultural spending commitments or planned future investment in the arts.

Opponents of the move have condemned the reallocation as lacking foresight.

Sue Dyde, who leads the Bradford Belles women’s performance group, initiated a public petition and coordinated a demonstration outside City Hall prior to Tuesday’s executive meeting where formal approval was anticipated.

According to statements made to the BBC, Dyde argued that the decision undermines urban renewal efforts and fails to consider the broader trajectory of Bradford’s development.

She highlighted the visible energy that City of Culture status had generated within the city.

Dyde characterised the situation as counterintuitive and economically unsound, calling on the Reform UK administration to pause the proposal and seek guidance from those with expertise in sustainable cultural development.

Dave Gill, representing the community ensemble Peace Artistes, pointed to the role such funding plays in sustaining grassroots initiatives that introduce new audiences to the arts and draw visitors to the city.

Morwenna Catt, affiliated with the collective Ministry of Bees and involved in the 2019 Bradford Festival, noted that although waste management services hold value, the creative sector functions as an economic driver.

The financial package had received approval from the preceding Labour administration in March, with allocations split evenly between events and festivals and support for cultural bodies.

A council spokesperson clarified that the sum falls outside the authority’s established cultural budget and therefore does not compromise current artistic investment or forthcoming funding strategies under development.

The Labour opposition backed demands for reconsideration, citing evidence that cultural programming increases foot traffic and commercial activity in urban centres.

The group nevertheless expressed support for restoring the Sugden End facility, attributing the possibility to the council’s strengthened financial position.
