Ahmed Abdalla, the acclaimed chef who featured on Great British Menu, is departing from one of Yorkshire’s most celebrated fine-dining establishments to focus on establishing his own culinary venture.
Abdalla has headed the kitchen at Legacy, located within The Grand hotel in York, and is scheduled to exit his position at the end of this month.
During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in building the restaurant’s reputation as a premier dining destination within the city.
The chef, who has resided in York for the past ten years, described the move as the next chapter in his professional journey.
He outlined plans to launch an establishment that would prioritise regional ingredients, community engagement and traditional Yorkshire hospitality.
Abdalla has garnered recognition among food enthusiasts throughout the region, not only through his accomplishments at Legacy but also following his participation in the BBC’s 20th anniversary edition of Great British Menu.
He represented Yorkshire and the North East during the competition before returning as a wildcard contestant in the concluding stages.
The chef explained that Yorkshire’s abundant culinary traditions have served as a significant source of inspiration throughout his career.
He emphasised his commitment to incorporating local elements into his cooking, stating that this approach allows dishes to honour the county’s agricultural richness while creating distinctive and engaging flavour profiles.
Originally hailing from London, Abdalla relocated to York having had no prior connection to the city.
Over the subsequent years, he became a prominent advocate for Yorkshire produce, championing everything from locally sourced meats and decorated fruit to seafood caught along the eastern coastline and wild ingredients harvested nearby.
Beyond the culinary aspects, Abdalla noted that the communal spirit he encountered during his time in York has profoundly influenced his future aspirations.
His objective is to develop a space that functions as a gathering point for local residents and establishes itself as an integral component of the city’s restaurant landscape.
Prior to joining The Grand, York, Abdalla cultivated his career across various establishments including Yorebridge House, Swinton Park and the York-based restaurant Skosh.
Upon his arrival at the hotel, he initially served at The Rise, the property’s brasserie-style venue, before assuming a senior position in establishing and launching Legacy in 2022.
Throughout his period at the restaurant, Abdalla collaborated with The Grand’s executive chef Kevin Bonello while mentoring and developing a young culinary team.
Under his direction, Legacy achieved three AA Rosettes, secured recognition within the Michelin Guide and was listed among The Telegraph’s selection of the 14 finest restaurants in York.
