£119bn savings maturity warning as returns could fall 45%

Financial institutions are alerting households that substantial savings volumes are approaching the conclusion of their fixed-term periods before December 31st, creating potential losses amounting to thousands of pounds for individuals who fail to reassess their arrangements.

Research conducted by Skipton Building Society indicates that customers who remain passive could experience reductions in earnings as significant as 45 percent.

The mutual society has labelled the current timeframe as Maturity Season, during which considerable balances held in term deposit products reach the end of their contractual durations and require customers to make decisions regarding reinvestment.

Findings from Skipton’s investigation reveal that approximately 33 percent of British depositors lack comprehension regarding what occurs when their accounts reach maturity, while numerous individuals have made no plans to relocate their funds once such products expire.

Katie Horne, who serves as bank relationship manager at deposit platform provider Flagstone, outlined how consumers frequently benefit from committing funds to longer-duration accounts offering attractive rates in exchange for restricted access.

She noted that such instruments can prove highly efficient for capital that holders do not anticipate requiring for expenditure within months or years.

However, Ms Horne observed that monitoring multiple maturity dates across different institutions proves challenging amid everyday responsibilities.

Consequently, substantial sums automatically transfer into sight deposits generating no interest, gradually diminishing the purchasing power of the underlying funds.

She drew attention to digital platforms facilitating easier transfers between financial institutions, enabling depositors to circumvent reductions in interest income.

Ms Horne pointed out that market expectations a year prior suggested borrowing costs would decline throughout 2026, yet this projection proved inaccurate.

Economic analysts anticipate the forthcoming Bank of England monetary policy announcement could instead result in elevated rates, fostering a more favourable environment for savings products.

She emphasised that consumers conducting modest investigation can readily identify term and instant-access options delivering returns exceeding inflation regardless of their particular circumstances.
