Bradford company underpaid minimum wage over black trousers requirement, repaid staff

A Bradford-based business has been criticised after an investigation revealed it had underpaid nearly twenty members of staff.

Creative Child Ltd operates under the trading name Bamboo Kids and is based in the BD4 area.

HMRC investigators discovered the company had failed to compensate workers to the value of ÂŁ1,377.26 across eighteen employees.

The shortfall stemmed from a company policy mandating that staff purchase black trousers as part of their work attire.

A company representative acknowledged that the colour specification for workwear had inadvertently influenced wage calculations.

The representative explained that the firm had not understood how requiring employees to obtain specific clothing items could potentially bring total compensation below statutory levels.

All affected workers received full repayment, additional sums were provided, and uniform guidelines were subsequently updated.

Megaplay (Bradford) Ltd, located in the BD8 district, faced similar findings.

The business fell short by ÂŁ1,218.66 when compensating fourteen workers.

The organisation cited its uniform expectations as the root cause of the discrepancy.

At the time of the review, management had not recognised that expenses related to required work attire could impact National Minimum Wage assessments.

The company characterised this as a straightforward misinterpretation of employment law and confirmed that all staff members were reimbursed promptly upon notification.

City Glass Works Ltd, situated on Usher Street in Broomfields within the BD4 postcode, was found to have withheld ÂŁ2,500.80 from a single employee.

The case involved a worker who rented accommodation owned by the enterprise.

Although the individual received the correct hourly rate, deductions related to the housing arrangement resulted in a shortfall when measured against minimum wage requirements.

A company statement indicated this arose from confusion regarding how separate rental arrangements intersected with wage legislation.

The employee received full repayment and new monitoring procedures have since been implemented.

Crown Foods (Bradford) Ltd, based in BD8, underpaid seventeen staff members by ÂŁ1,495.82.

The organisation attributed this to a computational mistake rather than intentional underpayment.

The outstanding amount was transferred shortly after tax authorities flagged the issue.

The company explained that the error was identified and corrected immediately, and internal processes were subsequently strengthened to prevent recurrence.

IBI Healthcare Ltd, trading as Lister Pharmacy in the BD8 area, did not respond to requests for comment.

The company was found to have withheld ÂŁ1,971.59 from one worker.

Two additional businesses, PB2 Ltd in BD7 and Fashion Wize Ltd, operating as Lister Schoolwear in BD9, similarly declined to provide statements.

PB2 Ltd owed ÂŁ747.86 to eleven workers, while Fashion Wize Ltd had failed to pay ÂŁ1,003.55 across twenty-eight employees.
