Every Aldi outlet throughout the Bradford area will cease operations for a 24-hour period later this year, according to an official statement from the discount retailer.

The company has confirmed that staff members will be given the opportunity to spend additional time with their families over the Christmas season, as all locations will remain shuttered on the day after Christmas Day.

Shoppers will be able to resume purchases when branches reopen the subsequent day, which falls on December 27.

The chain’s locations will additionally be closed on January 1 and will resume trading on Saturday, January 2, 2027.

Trading hours in the lead-up to Christmas will differ by branch, with numerous outlets extending their operating hours to accommodate customers completing their holiday preparations.

Rachel Geary, who serves as Communications Director at Aldi UK, addressed the reasoning behind the decision.

She noted that the festive period represents a particularly significant occasion for shoppers, while simultaneously constituting one of the most demanding trading stretches for store teams.

She acknowledged the considerable effort employees expend to guarantee shoppers can obtain all necessary items ahead of the celebrations.

She expressed that the company never takes such dedication for granted, and that ceasing operations on Boxing Day serves as a gesture of appreciation while enabling staff to properly rest and enjoy time with their nearest and dearest.

Remuneration for store assistants commences at £13.50 per hour across the country, rising to £14.88 within the M25 corridor.

With incremental increases based on tenure, these figures reach £14.47 and £15.20 respectively.

The company continues as the sole major food retailer to provide compensated rest periods, representing approximately £1,500 annually for a typical store worker.

Independent research conducted by the consumer organisation Which?

has identified the country’s most affordable supermarket.

The budget retailer achieved the lowest ranking for August, based on an assessment of 92 commonly purchased grocery products.

Purchasers would have spent up to £30.09 less at Aldi compared to Tesco, where the comparable basket of goods amounted to £189.45, and £26.19 less than at Sainsbury’s, whose total reached £185.55.

Morrisons proved £34.75 more costly at £194.11, whilst Waitrose customers would have paid £223.75 for identical products, representing a £64.39 premium over Aldi.

Julie Ashfield, holding the position of Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, expressed pride in achieving recognition as the nation’s most economical supermarket for the tenth consecutive month.

She stated that this accomplishment demonstrates the company’s persistent focus on delivering reliable value to shoppers on each occasion.

She noted that as households gear up for the new academic year, awareness of additional strain on family finances makes the retailer’s mission to enhance accessibility to quality food products particularly pertinent, supporting consumers in maximising their purchasing power.

The chain has occupied the top position in Which?’s monthly assessments throughout 2026 to date, following its designation as Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for the preceding year.
