An individual has been reported for road traffic offences following the confiscation of a high-speed electric bicycle by officers in Bradford.
The Ridstar Q20 model was observed travelling at speed with no pedalling effort through Norfolk Gardens before being halted by police in City Park.
Officers conducted tests which revealed the vehicle was capable of substantially greater velocities than those allowed for electrically assisted pedal cycles under current regulations.
According to West Yorkshire Police, examination of the machine showed a top speedometer reading of 37mph when using only the throttle mechanism.
This significantly surpasses the permitted 3.7mph (6kph) threshold set out in EAPC Regulations, resulting in the vehicle being classified as a motor vehicle rather than an electrically assisted pedal cycle.
The cyclist was reported for operating a motor vehicle without a valid licence and without appropriate insurance coverage.
Authorities also seized the bicycle under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act.
The enforcement action forms part of an ongoing road safety initiative by West Yorkshire Police.
The operation targets uninsured vehicles and those being used illegally on roads throughout the region.
Police have previously cautioned that certain powerful electric bicycles may be reclassified as motor vehicles if they exceed statutory speed limits.
Such classification would require riders to meet the same licensing, insurance and registration obligations as other motor vehicle operators.
