The annual Kilnsey Show and Sports drew thousands of visitors to the Yorkshire Dales this week, with the popular rural showcase proceeding despite some rainfall during the afternoon.

The agricultural event, held at the grounds beneath the famous crag, welcomed large numbers on Tuesday, with attendees travelling from across the country to enjoy the celebrations of rural life.

Families from Bradford have maintained a tradition of attending the show annually.

One regular visitor explained that urban residents place particular importance on exposing children to farm animals and rural environments, noting that the impressive cattle always generate reactions from younger spectators.

The livestock on display appeared healthy and well-presented throughout the proceedings.

The sheep enclosures attracted considerable interest from patrons who observed the standard of care provided to the animals on show.

Cattle entries drew particular attention, with visitors consistently noting the impressive scale of the animals on display.

Skipton MP Sir Julian Smith attended the event, taking in the sheepdog trials, horse-related competitions, classic vehicle displays and the notable Kilnsey Crag race.

In a statement, the MP described the occasion as an excellent demonstration of rural communities, local agriculture, traditional crafts and regional businesses that contribute significantly to the area’s economic vitality.

The member of parliament expressed gratitude to the organising committee, volunteers, exhibitors and participants whose efforts delivered a successful day for all attendees.

Chairman Chris Windle reported satisfaction with the event’s outcome, having also achieved personal success in the produce pavilion.

For the second consecutive year, his damson-flavoured vodka secured first place in its category, while his lemon and blueberry entry claimed second position among 22 contestants in the gentleman-made cake section.

Mr Windle observed that attendance was solid, with brief showers developing after midday but conditions remaining dry for the remainder of the day.

The event ground coped well with the weather, and parking facilities presented no difficulties.

The harness racing segment, which traditionally concludes the show, proved particularly successful, with additional heats introduced to accommodate the volume of entries received.
