A ten-person group completed a 131-mile vehicle-pushing challenge to raise funds for children’s charities, with supporters describing the effort as a remarkable feat of endurance and community spirit.

The campaign involved relatives and companions of Luke Mortimer, a young quadruple amputee who received treatment at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Mortimer, who lost portions of both arms and legs after developing meningitis in 2019, was honoured with the Child of Courage accolade at the Pride of Britain Awards, where he also encountered Dwayne Johnson.

The group pushed a donated Peugeot 207 from the Sheffield hospital to Silverstone Circuit in Buckinghamshire, covering the distance over six days.

The route extended through Bolsover Castle, Newark-on-Trent, Kettleby, Market Harborough, and Milton Malsor before reaching the Northamptonshire racing venue.

Adam Mortimer, Luke’s father, explained that while the original intention was to commence the journey from the family’s home in Embsay near Skipton, logistical considerations led to starting from Sheffield instead.

He noted that beginning from Skipton would have required an additional two days, and most participants had only allocated a week of leave from employment.

The expedition demanded meticulous preparation, including notifying every police jurisdiction along the itinerary about the slow-moving procession.

To navigate challenging gradients, team members adopted a dual approach of pushing and pulling the vehicle.

The automobile, which had previously failed its MOT examination, was stripped of its engine and transmission by engineering students at Craven College in Skipton and structurally modified to facilitate manual propulsion.

The daily schedule began at four in the morning, with physical effort commencing at five and continuing until half past seven.

Participants halted during peak traffic periods for morning meals before resuming at nine o’clock and maintaining the push until mid-afternoon.

Another pause followed to accommodate evening commuter congestion, with final exertions lasting until eight o’clock at night.

Accommodation consisted predominantly of tents and a support vehicle parked in commercial vehicle storage areas, with a single hotel stay necessitated by hygiene requirements.

The group benefited from a supplementary crew of seven individuals who provided logistical assistance throughout the venture.

The event coincided with CarFest, a three-day charitable music gathering established by broadcaster Chris Evans.

The festival supports organisations including BBC Children in Need, the Teenage Cancer Trust, and the Starlight Children’s Foundation, and promotes itself as the nation’s largest family fundraising celebration.

The Mortimer family’s motivation for the vehicle-pushing concept reportedly originated during the previous year’s gathering, following a prior team accomplishment involving mountain climbing and rowing across a Scottish lake.

Lee Towers served as a driver and participant in the initiative.

The team arrived at Silverstone on Friday, in advance of performances by artists including Jessie J, Tom Jones, Nile Rodgers, and Rick Astley.

During the event, Luke and Adam Mortimer appeared alongside Chris Evans on the main stage.

The campaign generated approximately ten thousand pounds for the festival’s charitable beneficiaries.

Team members expressed gratitude to all individuals involved in planning and executing the endeavour, as well as to those who contributed financially, provided sustenance, or offered encouragement.
