Calverley and Farsley Labour councillor resigns after eight years citing health struggles

Peter Carlill has tendered his resignation following eight years of service as a local representative.

The Labour politician for Calverley and Farsley announced his departure through a statement published on social media platforms.

Carlill was first elected to office in 2018 and held the position of the party’s executive member responsible for transport and planning matters.

In his announcement, Carlill disclosed that he had privately managed health difficulties, encompassing both physical and mental health concerns, which had increasingly hindered his ability to perform his duties adequately.

The departing councillor described his role as an excellent position that he frequently characterised as the most rewarding employment he had ever undertaken, one that enabled him to contribute positively to residents’ wellbeing and the community he holds dear on a daily basis.

However, Carlill noted that the position also presents considerable demands, requiring constant movement between competing priorities, round-the-clock availability, and sustained public examination that ranges from constructive and warranted feedback to less welcome commentary.

Carlill confirmed his resignation by submitting correspondence to the council’s chief executive alongside the Labour group leader, James Lewis.

Throughout his tenure, Carlill advocated for enhancements to public services through his involvement with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s transport committee.

In a separate online statement, West Yorkshire mayor Tracy Brabin expressed that Councillor Carlill would leave a significant gap in his position at Leeds City Council.

Brabin noted that as deputy chair of the transport committee, Carlill provided substantial expertise, dedication, and collaborative approach to his responsibilities, supporting efforts to return bus services to public ownership and enhance transportation infrastructure throughout the West Yorkshire region.

The mayor extended her best wishes to Carlill for his future endeavors and expressed confidence that he would remain active in serving his constituency.
