A major redevelopment project at a specialist education facility in Leeds has received the green light from local planners.
Leeds City Council has given approval for Broomfield SILC to be significantly enlarged, creating capacity for an additional 100 students with special educational needs and disabilities.
The scheme, budgeted at £30.6m, will see portions of the current campus on Broom Place demolished to make way for a contemporary three-storey educational facility.
Tilbury Douglas Construction Ltd has been selected as the principal contractor for the development.
Funding for the project will be sourced entirely from the authority’s capital programme, with the investment reflecting a documented requirement for enhanced specialist educational infrastructure across this section of Leeds.
According to council documentation, the initiative directly addresses both immediate and projected future demand for specialist inclusive learning placements in the local area.
The development is intended to guarantee that educational facilities meet contemporary standards, thereby reducing interruptions to both learning and support services.
Due to procedural complications encountered during the planning stages, the introduction of new placements will proceed in phases throughout the 2027/28 academic year.
The primary new structure is scheduled for completion by February 2028, with complementary external works and the dismantling of the existing main building finalised by September 2028.
Seven representations were submitted by members of the public during the consultation period, expressing reservations regarding acoustic impacts and the aesthetic character of the proposed structures.
Planning officers determined that all submitted concerns had been appropriately mitigated.
The planning assessment recognised that the scheme would deliver essential additional specialist educational provision in the locality, placing significant weight on the documented level of demand.
The design approach was deemed appropriate, and safeguards were confirmed to be in place to protect the residential amenity of neighbouring households.
