Disqualified driver doing 80mph in mobility car leads Bradford police chase

A 31-year-old man was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court after being found guilty of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and operating a vehicle without insurance.

Aiden Wood-Manders, from Woodvale Close on the Sutton estate, had been banned from driving for three years in March 2024 when the incident occurred in June last year.

The court was told that the Seat Arona, which belonged to a mobility scheme, was tracked reaching velocities of up to 80mph.

The driver navigated the wrong direction around multiple mini-roundabouts and travelled along a bus lane to circumvent traffic signals during the 35-minute pursuit through Bradford.

Prosecutor Tom Harris outlined how the chase commenced at approximately 9.25pm on June 27 when the vehicle was observed exceeding speed limits on Cemetery Road.

After halting on Netherlands Avenue, the driver accelerated and repeatedly reached the stated high speeds.

The vehicle was driven onto a pedestrian footpath before officers deployed a stinger device in the Halifax Road area to puncture the tyres.

The Seat subsequently collided with a police car and a stationary vehicle.

Wood-Manders, who was not covered by insurance at the time, physically resisted arrest, necessitating the use of PAVA incapacitant spray.

The incident concluded just before 10pm.

Wood-Manders admitted the offences in December 2025.

His legal representative, Kathryn Pitters, requested that any custodial term be suspended, highlighting her client’s deteriorating physical health since the time of the offences and arguing that immediate imprisonment would impose excessive hardship given his medical circumstances.

Further medical assessments were commissioned before sentencing proceeded.

Judge Ahmed Nadim observed that Wood-Manders had never obtained a full driving licence and that his prior record for driving during periods of disqualification and other motoring violations was deplorable.

The judge noted that previous attempts through community-based penalties and disqualification periods had failed to deter the defendant, who consistently disregarded such interventions.

The presiding judge characterised the pursuit as presenting an unacceptable danger to members of the public, stating that only through fortunate circumstances had no pedestrians, drivers, or passengers sustained catastrophic injuries or fatalities.

A custodial term of 14 months was deemed appropriate, reduced to 12 months to account for the defendant’s health condition.

Wood-Manders received an additional two-year driving prohibition and must successfully complete an extended driving assessment before regaining lawful road access.
