Addingham councillors urge residents to oppose 55-home Green Belt plan

Local elected representatives are calling for public input regarding a proposal to construct 55 residential properties on land within the Bradford authority area.

An application has been submitted seeking full planning consent for the Addingham scheme.

The plans include a new vehicular access point from Main Street, internal road infrastructure, vehicle parking facilities, soft landscaping works, public amenity space and drainage systems.

The site occupies Green Belt territory adjacent to Addingham Cricket Club.

The entire plot falls within the boundaries of Addingham’s designated conservation zone.

Councillors Jane Sellers, Richard Downey and Andrew Loy are urging local residents to review the submission and communicate their opinions to Bradford Council prior to the September 16 deadline.

The councillors suggest householders may wish to assess potential consequences for the conservation area, the cricket facility and its surroundings, significant panoramas across the locality, highway conditions, surface water management, fauna and flora, and existing community services.

Responses should clearly identify which elements of the proposal residents endorse or reject, together with the relevant planning grounds for those positions.

Ward representative Jane Sellers expressed concern that constructing 55 dwellings on these open meadows would irrevocably alter the village’s eastern entrance and its pastoral character.

She stated her intention to mount a robust objection to the scheme.

According to the councillor, Bradford Council’s own conservation area appraisal notes that the recreational ground and agricultural land situated south of Main Street carry Green Belt protection, with any gradual encroachment requiring resistance.

The assessment reportedly highlights that panoramas spanning from this locality toward Moorside, Ilkley Moor and beyond into the settlement hold significance by preserving the rural environment.

Sellers described the cricket ground as a treasured component of Addingham’s communal identity and questioned whether such a substantial residential project belongs in this location.

Fellow ward member Richard Downey indicated he harboured substantial reservations about the development’s magnitude and positioning.

He characterised the scheme as considerably more than a minor infill venture, noting it would introduce 55 households onto open countryside within the protected zone directly alongside the recreational facility.

The neighbourhood development plan for Addingham apparently recognises the vista from the cricket ground extending across these fields as noteworthy, with the traditional stone barn serving as a key landmark.

Downey appealed to constituents to scrutinise the application thoroughly so that the local authority fully comprehends the depth of local feeling.

The public can review documentation and submit representations via Bradford Council’s digital planning register using reference 26/02592/MAF.

The window for responses concludes on September 16, 2026.
