Whitbread shuts all 195 Beefeater and Brewers Fayre sites, 3,800 jobs at risk

Whitbread has confirmed the closure of all 195 Beefeater and Brewers Fayre establishments across the United Kingdom, concluding more than five decades of operation.

The Dalesway venue in Keighley and numerous other locations will cease trading imminently as part of a comprehensive restructuring programme implemented by the parent company.

Brewers Fayre traces its origins to 1979 when Vic and Jean Ellis acquired the Farmers Arms establishment near Preston.

Following a successful renovation, the pair rebranded the venue using a name coined by Jean Ellis, who had originally suggested Brewery Fayre before the final adaptation.

The new establishment reportedly attracted patrons from considerable distances, with some travelling up to 30 miles to visit.

Whitbread subsequently expanded the concept into a national network, surpassing 100 outlets by the end of the 1980s.

The chain offered traditional pub fare, carvery services and family-oriented amenities.

In 1992, numerous venues incorporated Charlie Chalk Fun Factory soft-play areas, while the Brewsters concept, introduced in 1999, placed increased emphasis on children’s activities.

The estate peaked at approximately 280 locations during the 1990s, operating alongside Premier Inn hotels under Whitbread’s portfolio.

Beefeater, established in 1974, achieved significant expansion in 1995 when Whitbread purchased and converted the Berni Inn chain, adding 115 locations.

The brand reached its zenith with more than 250 establishments during the late 1990s.

The company announced the closures in April as part of a strategic five-year plan aimed at achieving £250 million in cost reductions.

Whitbread intends to convert certain restaurant properties into additional Premier Inn accommodation and divest approximately £1.5 billion in freehold assets to support expansion initiatives.

The group currently operates 86,600 hotel rooms and projects growth to 96,000 by the 2031 financial year.

Dominic Paul, Whitbread’s chief executive, explained that rising operational costs, including business rates and national insurance contributions, had prompted the comprehensive review.

The strategy seeks to transform the organisation into a higher-margin hotel operation with improved returns.

The restructuring places approximately 3,800 positions at risk among a total workforce of 30,000 in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

While Whitbread anticipates redeploying numerous affected employees across other business areas, the company acknowledged that the changes would necessitate significant reductions in headcount.

Additional Whitbread brands face closure during the same period.

Table Table, which launched in 2006, will shut on Thursday, September 3.

Cookhouse + Pub and Bar + Block, established in 2017 and 2016 respectively, will close on the same date.

Brewers Fayre venues will cease trading on Monday, September 7, with Beefeater sites following on Thursday, September 10.

Some establishments may continue operating under new ownership.

An agreement has been reached for the conditional sale of 53 sites to Queensway Inns, subject to final conditions.

The buyer intends to maintain the venues as operational hospitality businesses, potentially preserving around 900 positions through transfer arrangements.

However, the futures of the remaining 208 sites among the 261 earmarked for closure remain unconfirmed.

The loyalty programme associated with these establishments concluded recently.

Members had until August 31 to redeem accumulated points, with the scheme having offered rewards including £5 food vouchers, complimentary starters, desserts and wine bottles from 500 points collected.
