Sir Keir Starmer may be appointed to role in North Yorkshire after Commons resignation

Published on

Former prime minister Sir Keir Starmer is set to receive a ceremonial position in North Yorkshire following his departure from Parliament.

The ex-Labour leader announced his intention to stand down as representative for the Holborn and St Pancras constituency, with the position in Scarborough expected to follow.

Under parliamentary procedures, Commons members seeking to leave their seats are granted the title of Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead in Scarborough, or alternatively the Chiltern Hundreds.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer makes this formal appointment, which enables MPs to exit the Commons despite constitutional restrictions against direct resignation.

The mechanism functions as a technicality to bypass the longstanding parliamentary rule preventing members from voluntarily giving up their seats.

A Treasury representative informed the Local Democracy Reporting Service that an official statement regarding the specific appointment would be released on Tuesday evening.

The precedent was established earlier this year when Nigel Farage received the Crown Steward and Bailiff position at the Manor of Northstead in Scarborough, following his resignation and subsequent attempt to regain his parliamentary seat.

According to the UK Parliament website, these positions were historically compensated by the Crown but now represent unpaid, formal titles applied for when a member requires disqualification from the Commons.

Sir Keir, first elected in 2015, discussed his departure in an interview with the Camden New Journal.

He stated that attention would shift toward international matters encompassing defence, security, trade and technology within an evolving global landscape.

Additionally, longstanding efforts to address violence targeting women and girls would persist.

He indicated that former prime ministers bear a responsibility to clarify their future intentions, and having chosen to prioritise international affairs, stepping down represented the appropriate course of action.
