Ripon Racecourse has named its inaugural poet in residence.
North Yorkshire-based poet and writer Antony Pickthall will undertake the fresh position during a six-month residency backed by Arts Council England.
Throughout his residency at the racecourse, Mr Pickthall will compose and present verse drawing inspiration from the venue, with these works to be showcased through augmented reality technology.
Mr Pickthall expressed that the grant would enable him to develop his poetry while honouring one of Britain’s most cherished racecourses in an alternative manner, aiming to encapsulate what distinguishes Ripon.
He noted this also presents a chance to champion creative writing and employ cutting-edge technology in its presentation.
The verses will initially appear on Ripon Races’ Facebook platforms before being positioned throughout the racecourse via QR codes.
Attendees can photograph these codes to view video presentations of the poetry.
James Hutchinson, managing director of Ripon Racecourse, stated that the venue has always represented more than just the sporting action.
He highlighted the organisation’s pride in its legacy, surroundings and the narratives that render Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse so distinctive.
He explained that appointing a Poet in Residence offered an exciting chance to honour those tales through an innovative and captivating approach while drawing new audiences to both racing and the arts.
He added that by merging poetry with augmented reality, they anticipate visitors will engage with the racecourse in an altered manner, uncovering moments of contemplation and artistry alongside the thrill of race day.
Mr Pickthall’s theatrical work encompasses All Heads Turn, Bath Party, Catch the Pigeon and The Stunning Flight of Archibald Bone.
His screenwriting encompasses commissions for Channel 4, Granada and independent production companies.
Mr Pickthall released his debut short story anthology in 2019 and is presently developing his inaugural poetry compilation.
