A mother from the Bradford area is attempting to secure £14,000 to fund a bionic prosthetic arm for her young daughter.

Kirsten Faulkner’s child, Beaux, entered the world missing part of her right arm and has spent years navigating daily life with impressive resilience.

Now at an older age, Beaux, who lives in Shipley, has chosen to pursue a bionic arm to assist with routine activities and boost her self-assurance.

According to Ms Faulkner, she never anticipated her daughter would show interest in such a device. However, she believes her daughter has reached an age where she is becoming aware of her appearance being different from others.

She noted that while her daughter’s condition had never caused concern before, it now causes some distress. Beaux has expressed a desire to resemble her peers.

The family is working to gather £14,000 towards the expense of a prosthetic arm.

Describing her daughter, Ms Faulkner said Beaux refuses to allow her physical difference to limit her.

She explained that Beaux possesses a strong personality, complete honesty, and an excellent sense of humour, making her one of the most compassionate children imaginable who would genuinely go to great lengths to help anyone.

Beaux takes pleasure in cycling, swimming, playing football and collecting various objects, and her mother reports she consistently embraces new challenges.

According to Ms Faulkner, while certain activities should theoretically present obstacles, Beaux approaches everything with the mindset that she will try her hardest until physically unable to continue, willing to attempt absolutely anything.

The young girl’s determination frequently results in those around her forgetting she has only one hand.

Ms Faulkner confirmed this observation, stating that numerous people comment on Beaux’s resolve.

Although Beaux tackles life confidently, certain everyday activities remain problematic.

Ms Faulkner explained that fastening shoelaces, cleaning teeth and styling her own hair can be particularly difficult.

The possibility of a bionic prosthetic transforming everyday life became apparent when the family initially investigated the option several years ago following Beaux’s interest, though she was deemed too young at that time.

Now older, she has had the opportunity to trial a bionic prosthetic through an event organised by the Limbless Association.

The device operates through muscle movements and could enable Beaux to perform tasks she currently finds difficult.

Ms Faulkner noted the arm would allow her daughter to grip items while eating, stabilise a cup, clean her teeth and manage similar activities, making things considerably simpler.

The prosthetic could also enable Beaux to participate in additional activities at her school and enhance her independence.

The fundraising campaign is gaining momentum, with the bionic arm priced at approximately £20,000.

Although partial funding assistance exists, the family must gather £14,000 themselves.

Thus far, roughly £5,000 has been collected through contributions, prize draws and backing from relatives and acquaintances.

Beaux’s school is also arranging a dress-down day the following week to increase the total.

Ms Faulkner expressed gratitude for any assistance.

She stated that all contributions are valued regardless of size, and even simply sharing their story would help reach more people.

Recalling the moment she discovered Beaux’s condition, Ms Faulkner acknowledged it was an incredibly difficult experience.

She described feeling as though their world had collapsed when they first learned about Beaux’s hand, but emphasised that none of those concerns matter once the child arrives, as families adapt and find ways forward.

She now hopes the fundraising initiative will provide her daughter with opportunities many individuals consider ordinary.
