Five critical items absent: why authorities flagged this motorist

A Toyota motorist observed driving along a main road in Bradford was halted and reported after officers uncovered multiple defects.

Officers from the Bradford East division located the vehicle on Manchester Road and discovered it had lacked a current Vehicle Excise Licence since August 2024, prompting them to conduct additional inspections.

During the examination, investigators established that every wheel was lacking a wheel nut.

A representative from West Yorkshire Police explained that upon spotting the Toyota travelling along Manchester Road, checks revealed the absence of a valid Vehicle Excise Licence since August 2024. Officers naturally stopped the vehicle to address this issue, and while inspecting it further identified that one wheel nut was absent from all four wheels.

The vehicle was taken into custody on behalf of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, and the motorist was reported for operating the car in an unsafe condition.

What makes absent wheel nuts particularly hazardous?

Absent wheel nuts pose significant danger because they diminish the strength and equilibrium of the wheel attachments, placing additional strain on the remaining studs and elevating the possibility of the wheel becoming loose or separating entirely while the vehicle is in motion.

According to MOT regulations in this country, a single absent nut on a wheel is categorised as a major defect that results in MOT failure, while two or more missing from the same wheel constitutes a dangerous defect, signifying the vehicle ought not to be operated.

Even with a sole missing nut and a current MOT certificate, authorities retain the discretion to deem the vehicle unroadworthy and impose penalties, penalty points or disqualification should they determine it presents a hazardous condition. Consequently, operating a vehicle with missing wheel nuts is not only unsafe but may also lead to legal repercussions, and they ought to be replaced without delay.
