A hearing to consider a retailer’s request to sell alcoholic beverages around the clock throughout the week was cancelled at the last moment.

Members of Calderdale Council’s licensing committee had been scheduled to render a decision Thursday morning regarding Johal Brothers’ proposal to modify the premises licence for their location on Ovenden Road in Halifax.

However, the local authority announced Wednesday evening that the session had been delayed after the applicant’s representative requested a postponement due to a family emergency.

Council officials have stated that because of upcoming electoral events, the hearing will probably be arranged for some point after May, likely in June or later.

The proposal faces resistance from the council’s community protection team as well as West Yorkshire Police, both of which have submitted formal objections on grounds that the establishment would create public nuisance in a residential neighbourhood.

The variation request was submitted by proprietor Harit Johal. If granted, the business would be permitted to sell alcohol for off-premises consumption continuously from Sunday through Saturday.

The submission also seeks authorization to serve late-night food and beverages between 11pm and 5am, seven days a week.

The applicant maintains that the proposal incorporates a comprehensive set of stringent requirements intended to uphold both national and local licensing goals. These include installation of surveillance cameras, training programs for employees regarding alcohol sales, maintenance of adequate staffing levels, documentation of any incidents in a dedicated log, and implementation of a policy for refusing service to intoxicated individuals.
