Mother creates lasting tribute to son lost just before his third birthday

A woman from Wibsey is honouring her late son’s memory by providing play support for young patients in hospital.

Claire Walker lost her son Axl shortly before he turned three, and over the past decade has dedicated herself to raising funds in his honour.

Axl received treatment for an uncommon blood condition at Bradford Royal Infirmary, needing monthly blood transfusions and two bone marrow transplants.

Ms Walker expressed that she simply wanted to make a positive impact, and that no child should have to spend days, weeks or months in hospital without the chance to play, as their medical condition should not limit their joy. She noted that despite everything he endured in his brief life, he was a cheerful child who adored playing, and that their frequent hospital visits would have stripped him of his enthusiasm without the toys and activities available.

To help other children in similar positions, Ms Walker established the Sparkle for Axl campaign.

In the ten years since, more than £22,000 has been collected to aid young patients through Bradford Hospitals Charity.

The money has been used to supply toys and entertainment for children in hospital and contributed to creating a sensory room for those staying long-term.

Last year, Ms Walker ran 13 half marathons to honour her son.

The campaign also backs the charity’s Gift of Play appeal, which focuses on ensuring children in hospital can access play and therapeutic activities.

Laura Riach, director of Bradford Hospitals Charity, said that the significance of play in hospital cannot be overstated. She explained that children find themselves in unfamiliar clinical surroundings and often miss out on everyday activities other families take for granted. She added that they want every child, regardless of ability, to have access to fun and learning, and that Claire is one of their most passionate supporters through Sparkle for Axl, for which they are deeply grateful.

To mark ten years of fundraising, Ms Walker has arranged the Sparkle for Axl Charity Ball.

The event will take place on Friday, September 18, 2026, at Bradford City Football Club and will bring together supporters, families and the local community.

Attendees can expect a two-course meal, live music, a DJ, along with opportunities to take part in games and a raffle.

Tickets cost £50 per person.

The occasion aims to raise further funds and celebrate Axl’s enduring legacy.
