FIREFIGHTERS are tackling a tough endurance event to commemorate the victims of the Grenfell Tower disaster.

Crew members from Bingley Fire Station’s Red Watch intend to travel 72 miles using gym equipment set up outside their station on Sunday, May 3, 2026, prior to this year’s ninth anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy, which claimed 72 lives.

The initiative, named 72 for the 72, will collect donations for The Fire Fighters Charity, which assists serving and former fire service employees along with their families.

Firefighter Matt Broadbent from Bingley Fire Station explained that the team wanted to arrange something distinctive in Bingley, honouring the 72 individuals who perished at Grenfell while gathering funds for The Fire Fighters Charity and offering people an opportunity to come together in support of a worthy cause.

Grenfell remains a matter that still echoes throughout the fire and rescue sector.

This challenge represents their method of demonstrating respect while simultaneously undertaking something constructive for The Fire Fighters Charity, which delivers essential support to firefighters, control staff and fire service personnel across the United Kingdom.

The crew will employ rowing machines, exercise bikes, ski ergs and treadmills to collectively achieve the 72-mile target.

Firefighters are welcoming local residents to attend, demonstrate solidarity and contribute to this worthwhile fundraising effort.

Visitors will have the opportunity to meet crew members, discover more about West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and pick up practical guidance on fire, water and road safety.

Mr Broadbent added that the team would be delighted if people came along, offered their support, discovered more about the crew’s work and backed a charity that holds significant meaning for the service.

The occasion will also feature displays of fire engines and boats, the water flume, refreshments and a chance to meet local firefighters from #TeamWYFRS.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend and support the challenge, which aims to collect funds for The Fire Fighters Charity and pay tribute to the memory of those who died in the Grenfell Tower fire.

The Grenfell Tower fire took place on June 14, 2017.

The endurance event will run from 10am to 3pm, or until participants complete the distance, outside Bingley Fire Station.
