A fresh open-air artwork is set to occupy a former factory location for public viewing over the coming two years.

Bowles’s piece entitled Komorebi will be exhibited at the sculpture garden within Sunny Bank Mills starting 9 May 2026 through May 2028.

The creation combines illumination, hues and motion, crafted to prompt guests to pause and become more aware of their environment.

The artist explained that her work interweaves patterns of changing brightness, moulded by atmospheric conditions, motion and the observer’s position, to generate a physical awareness of chronology and space.

She felt drawn to the heritage and manufacturing legacy of the Mills, and when positioned in conversation with the Colonnade, Komorebi acquires an almost archaeological dimension where brightness and darkness reflect the cadences of production and collective effort.

She expressed enthusiasm that this body of work would be displayed publicly at Sunny Bank Mills.

The venue was described as a vibrant location where local participation inspires innovative approaches to experiencing the arts.

The piece reacts to the evolving characteristics of natural light, employing delicate materials resembling paper that generate altering silhouettes and tints across the hours.

Every component of the piece is crafted to engage with its environment, reshaping how guests perceive the historic West Leeds location.
