A vacant shop unit could be converted into a high-tech laundry business if councillors give the green light.

The scheme involves setting up a self-service wash hub in an ex-corner store situated within the Bramley Shopping Centre.

Speed Queen, a firm running laundrettes where machines can be overseen remotely via a mobile phone programme, has filed a planning bid with the council.

A planning statement explains that customers could use the Speed Queen programme to discover available machines and obtain alerts once washing cycles finish.

The statement described Speed Queen launderettes as modern, digitally-powered self-service venues.

Customers can pay through multiple cashless options, such as bank or credit cards, digital wallet features, and the Speed Queen mobile application.

The retail unit has stood vacant since September last year and was formerly occupied by the business Ecotopia.

The statement advised that Speed Queen ranks as the world’s leading self-service laundrette brand, operating more than 1,000 sites throughout Europe.

The Bramley laundry outlet would function without employees on site, although cleaning professionals and engineers would be needed to upkeep the facility.

The statement observed that the suggested change of use would mean the premises, currently unused, would return to productive employment.

The suggested laundry establishment would open from 7am until 10pm every day.

Leeds City Council is reviewing a change of use planning appeal which remains available for community input until May 11.
