Competitor describes unforgettable race completed in memory of sibling

A runner has recounted his remarkable experience taking part in this year’s London Marathon.

He completed the 26.2-mile route on Sunday in tribute to his late brother John.

Almost £9,000 was collected for Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice, where John spent his last days.

He said the TCS 2026 London Marathon surpassed all his expectations.

He had never encountered anything comparable and probably never would again.

He felt tremendous pride at gathering close to £9,000 for Sue Ryder and for the exceptional help they provided during his marathon training.

This achievement, together with the encouragement from everyone who contributed to fundraising in memory of his brother John, would remain with him forever.

He travelled to the capital the day before the race and recalled the pre-race atmosphere at the Expo as electric and full of eager anticipation.

The next morning, he became emotional as he parted from his wife Steph at the assembly point.

He said Steph had been his anchor until that point, and entering the race alone felt somewhat daunting.

The event started smoothly, although rising temperatures added difficulty to the run.

He said they knew the conditions would be warm, but the heat became considerably more intense and he found it necessary to slow his pace to avoid problems.

Approaching Tower Bridge marked a significant highlight of the day.

He said it was amazing.

The noise was deafening, with spectators packed on both sides of the bridge urging runners on.

He found the most demanding stretch of the course began at Canary Wharf, though he drew strength from thinking of his family.

At mile 17, he spotted his wife among the spectators and shared a quick hug.

He said by that point his target finishing time had become unattainable, but that did not matter as this was not why he had entered.

It was then he contemplated his purpose: to raise funds for those who had looked after his younger brother John, who received palliative care at Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice.

Arriving at the finish line was deeply emotional.

He said for a moment he was oblivious to the aches in his legs and feet.

He was completely consumed by the happiness of having finished the race.
