Young Muay Thai competitor Cain Sykes is getting ready to compete for England at the Bangkok World Festival in June, aiming to continue his strong international results.

The 17-year-old from Low Moor goes into the event in good shape, having won both his fights this year against tough rivals.

Looking back at his February bout in Manchester, Sykes noted he faced Jay Clough from Tyneside on the Hitman show, one of the largest Muay Thai events in the North. He described Clough as an exciting and brave fighter, making it a difficult matchup. Both competitors were eager for victory, and Sykes was satisfied to win through a split decision.

He backed that up with another triumph in March at the SKS Empire event in Walsall, defeating hometown boxer Zakariya Iman in a gruelling contest.

Sykes said it was an extremely fierce fight. Both fighters went without head protection, using only elbow guards, making it a hard-fought and competitive bout. He explained that his opponent possessed solid boxing ability, so he adjusted his strategy and ensured he utilised his kicking effectively.

The Low Moor resident has been training seriously in Muay Thai for two years after beginning at the respected Bad Company Gym in Leeds, which is considered one of England’s premier Thai boxing training facilities.

He now completes up to six training sessions weekly as he continues improving his abilities.

Being chosen for Team England represents a major career achievement.

Sykes expressed that it is a genuine privilege to wear the England vest for the first time. He mentioned he had visited Thailand twice previously, but this would be entirely different as a competitor. He particularly anticipated the pre-competition training at a recognised gym, and the group planned to spend time in Chiang Mai following the event.

The Muay Thai World Festival runs for five days beginning June 25, uniting combat sports athletes from around the world.

Sykes’ mother Becky believes the discipline has benefited her son greatly. She stated the family takes great pride in Cain’s accomplishments. She explained that Muay Thai has developed him in both body and mind, significantly boosting his self-assurance. He commits fully to his training programme and maintains strict dietary habits. While acknowledging inherent dangers, she feels the positives considerably exceed them.

The family is financing the Bangkok trip themselves and currently looking for commercial backing to help with Cain’s involvement.
