A tag rugby event has brought in over £7,000 to support children facing difficulty.

The third Rugby4Respite tournament was held at Ilkley RFC’s Stacks Field and run by Ilkley T5s, collecting £7,250 for The Principle Trust Children’s Charity.

This funding will allow 12 families to enjoy week-long breaks along with food parcels.

Mike Davies MBE, founder of The Principle Trust, said the event continues to prove significant for the charity, with this year proving equally impressive.

He noted that seeing the competition grow and the substantial amount generated for vulnerable children deserves real recognition.

The tag rugby tournament featured 22 adult teams competing in five-minute five-a-side matches, with Ilkley Colts securing the championship division and Sutcliffe Construction taking the social section.

Since launching in 2024, Rugby4Respite has gathered more than £20,000 for the charity, helping 33 families in total.

This year’s gathering included Robbie Moore MP, who presented the championship trophy, alongside entertainment and prize draws.

Mr Davies thanked all those involved in making the event happen.

He said heartfelt thanks went to coach Pete Small for his essential work in arranging everything, programme sponsors Tranmer White Estate agents, Your Harrogate programme director and presenter Ricky Durkin who acted as commentator, Fara Physio for treating player injuries, Martinez Wines in Ilkley for covering referee costs, and Ilkley RFC for supplying the facilities.

Since forming in 2011, The Principle Trust has aided almost 6,000 children through respite breaks across its eight sites in Blackpool, Filey, and the Lake District.

The Principle Trust follows a 100% donation policy, meaning every penny of profits goes straight toward its cause.
