The motorcyclist and small-screen star recognised for his work with both major broadcasters has been handed a driving ban after police caught him travelling too fast.
Guy Martin, also famed as a top-level bike racer, visited Yorkshire at the start of this year to headline The Speed Show event at Elvington Airfield on the weekend of February 22 and 23.
The 44-year-old programme presenter was caught riding his Honda machine in excess of the posted limit on two separate occasions, including along the A43 close to Brackley in the Bicester area of Oxfordshire, where speed detection equipment logged him at 78mph beneath a temporary 50mph cap.
Through his solicitors, the Isle of Man TT racer additionally admitted to travelling at 46mph along the A50 near Leicester where the allowable speed stood at 40mph.
Court records show that Martin, a native of Grimsby, amassed at least 12 penalty points on his driving licence and accepted that he must now serve a six-month disqualification from driving.
The television presenter achieved 17 podium finishes at the Isle of Man TT races throughout his two-wheeled career and has built a reputation for his attempts at speed records.
In 2016 he made a bid to surpass the two-wheeled world land speed record, and he succeeded in setting world records for the fastest agricultural tractor, quickest soapbox racer, and greatest velocity achieved on a gravity-fed snow sled.
A colleague from the law firm Chattertons conveyed on his behalf that he wished to express his remorse to the judicial panel for his conduct.
Due to being convicted of both offences, Mr Martin will accumulate penalty points and does not intend to challenge the six-month suspension that follows from this total.
A court official indicated that Martin received his sentence at Loughborough Magistrates’ Court the previous week in a closed hearing, along with an obligation to settle £1,329 in combined fines, legal costs and victim compensation contributions.
Raised among machinery, Martin developed a childhood fascination with engines and heavy vehicles, later qualifying as a lorry mechanic while continuing his racing activities. His father competed as both a driver and mechanic, nurturing his enthusiasm for velocity, mechanisms and practical engineering.
Martin’s competitive record included both triumphs and frightening crashes. He suffered spinal damage in two separate racing incidents, one at the TT in 2010 and another at the Ulster Grand Prix five years later, yet he remained popular within British motorsport. He brought his professional motorcycle racing career to a close in July 2017.
Beyond the race track, he became a recognisable television figure and author, admired for his candid approach and enthusiasm for engineering, history and manual skills.
