Bradford gig set to raise funds for vital charity

Published on

A fundraising concert celebrating the Samaritans mental health charity will feature original musical works inspired by the organisation’s phone support service while raising money for its Bradford centre.

The event will be held at Northcliffe Church in Hall Royd, Shipley, with Hall Royd Brass Band serving as presenters. Supporting acts include Airedale Flute Choir and May Contain Notes, a trio performing both unaccompanied vocal pieces and songs with guitar accompaniment.

Aisha Walker, who leads the Bradford Samaritans branch and also plays with Hall Royd Brass Band, explained that what makes this event special is that each ensemble has composed a unique piece reflecting the vital work carried out by the telephone support line. The Bradford branch depends on exceptional volunteers who give their time to speak with people going through distress or struggling to cope.

She noted that while volunteers provide their services free of charge, obtaining funds to keep the service running remains an ongoing challenge. The organisers felt a concert offering a musical insight into the volunteers’ work would effectively demonstrate the service while collecting donations for the branch.

She added that Bradford Samaritans is looking for new volunteers, particularly those able to work during late-night hours, as early mornings represent the period when callers need support most. Full training and guidance are given to all listeners, and the organisation welcomes applications from throughout the community. Those interested can apply through the Samaritans website.

The concert takes place on Saturday 16 May at 7.30pm. Entry is free with a collection held during the break. Refreshments and a raffle will be available, and donations of raffle prizes are welcomed.

For further information about the event or to offer raffle prizes, contact Aisha Walker at Bradford Samaritans on 07579 103006.

Samaritans offers a free service available at any time from any phone on 116 123. More details can be found at samaritans.org.
