Watch out for runners wearing pyjamas in this Bradford park tomorrow

BRADFORD’S longest-running parkrun is celebrating its anniversary in style this weekend by hosting a fun-filled pyjama party.

Lister Park parkrun is set to mark its 16th birthday on Saturday with participants invited to leave their usual running gear at home and complete the 5km course in nightwear.

Instead of lycra and vests, runners and walkers can roll straight out of bed, pull on their trainers, and take to the familiar three‑lap route around the park wearing pyjamas, dressing gowns and slippers.

Treats at the finish line

The celebrations will not stop at the finish line, with a “midnight snack” table laid on for participants, alongside a visit from an ice cream van to help mark the occasion.

“This promises to be another spectacular event,” said Jon Harris, one of the event directors at Lister Park parkrun.

“We always like to celebrate our birthday in style, and this year will be no different.

Mr Harris said: “The event means so much to so many, with over 400 keen parkrunners joining us every week.

“It is a fundamental part of their weekly routines, and the birthday celebrations are a way for people to say thank you to everyone who has taken part over the years, and especially to the volunteers who make it happen.”

From humble beginnings to a weekly fixture

The first Lister Park parkrun took place on April 17, 2010, with just 82 participants.

Since then, tens of thousands of runners and walkers have completed the scenic course, passing landmarks including Cartwright Hall and tackling the famously named Teeny Tiny Hill.

Over the years, the event has welcomed visitors from across the UK and around the world, with parkrun tourists regularly joining local runners for their Saturday morning fix.

A warm welcome for newcomers

Mr Harris said: “This week, we’re expecting lots of tourists coming to visit us, special events are always popular here, and people really enjoy dressing up, it’s such a fun way to start your weekend.

He added: “Parkrun is welcoming, friendly and open to all.

“You can run, jog or walk – it doesn’t matter how fast or slow you go.

“You’ll be supported by amazing volunteers all the way round.

“If you’ve never taken part before, this is the perfect week to join us.”

Lister Park parkrun takes place every Saturday at 9am.

It is free, inclusive and open to all.
