Bradford receives £12m fund to support those in need

Published on

A new annual £12 million emergency fund is being introduced to help residents of Bradford who need support this year.

The Crisis and Resilience Fund is aimed at those experiencing unexpected financial difficulties and will run for at least three years.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Bradford Council approved the fund, with one member observing that hardship can affect anyone at any time.

Regarding the Crisis and Resilience Fund

The Government has released funding covering April 2026 to March 2029, distributing resources to councils throughout England to assist low-income households.

Bradford Council will receive £38.2 million across the three-year period.

The money will support initiatives including emergency payment schemes, food banks and welfare guidance services.

Executive members of the council reviewed the programme on Tuesday.

A more integrated approach for those facing financial difficulty

A document presented to members indicated the fund aims to assist individuals who face unexpected financial pressures, such as loss of earnings or surprise costs, while also building longer-term financial stability.

Iain McBeath, the Adult Social Care director, said Bradford currently has excellent schemes operating to help those struggling financially.

He added this will create a more joined-up service where people will be able to visit any council office or community venue and be pointed towards the most suitable support available.

What do financial shocks encompass?

The document presented to members explained the fund has two main objectives: to provide swift help for those experiencing financial hardship, and to lower future need for emergency assistance by tackling root causes of financial difficulty.

Financial shocks may involve sudden loss of income, unforeseen costs or housing difficulties.

Beyond instant relief, the fund backs services that enhance people’s capacity to handle finances, adapt to changes and bounce back from problems.

Many individuals are unaware of the benefits they could receive or believe they do not qualify.

Complicated eligibility rules, application procedures and negative attitudes prevent people from engaging with the benefits system.

Positive outcome for Bradford

Funding allocations include over £1 million across three years for an energy-efficient homes project, £2.25 million spread across three years to establish food pantries and £5.4 million for payments to help Bradford residents facing financial emergencies.

Council Leader Susan Hinchcliffe said it is welcome news that Bradford has received this funding from Government to help people at their most vulnerable moment and support them in improving their situations.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Executive for Healthy People and Places, remarked hard times can strike anyone at any stage of life, and they may have several problems requiring guidance.
